“A compact waterfall in lush forest with easy-access stairs, clear safe pools for kids, perfect for cooling off and relaxing near Phuket city.”
Kathu Waterfall is one of the natural attractions located in the heart of Phuket Island, between Phuket Town and Patong Beach, making it easily accessible in a short time. The highlight of this waterfall is its small to medium-sized cascade nestled within a tropical rainforest. The dense vegetation and large trees provide shade along the way, creating a cool and refreshing atmosphere, a stark contrast to the bustling beach areas of Phuket. It's perfect for those seeking true relaxation in nature.
The waterfall cascades down in several tiers, approximately 3-4 main levels, each with natural pools at the bottom. Tourists can ascend to the different levels via concrete stairs and forest paths. The lowest level is the most accessible, a shallow stream suitable for families and children. The upper levels require a steeper climb, taking about 15-20 minutes, leading to deeper pools and a more tranquil atmosphere.
The waterfall's charm lies in its seasonal changes. During the rainy season, from June to November, when the water volume is at its highest, the waterfall flows powerfully and is particularly beautiful, clearly showcasing the water cascading down the rocks. Conversely, the dry season, especially from March to April, is less spectacular. The water volume decreases significantly during this period, with some areas having only a small stream or almost no water at all. Therefore, planning your trip time is crucial if you want to see the waterfall in its most pristine condition.
The surrounding area of the waterfall is lush with natural forest, offering the sounds of flowing water and wildlife as a backdrop, making it ideal for relaxation, leisurely gatherings, or simple picnics. Basic amenities such as rest pavilions are provided at intervals, and there are small restaurants and shops near the entrance. However, the true beauty of the waterfall lies at the upper levels, requiring a hike, which offers a more natural environment and fewer tourists.
In terms of safety, Kathu Waterfall is considered relatively suitable for family trips, especially the lower areas with shallow, gently flowing water. However, extra caution is advised at the higher levels due to slippery rocks and uneven water depths. Furthermore, there are no staff or lifeguards on site, so visitors should wear sturdy shoes with good grip and avoid hiking during heavy rain to prevent accidents from slippery surfaces and strong currents.
