“The first strategic Mekong bridge featuring a unique central railway track, seamlessly linking Thai-Lao logistics while offering breathtaking panoramic river views and historical significance.”

The First Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge Nong Khai is a monumental cross-border infrastructure connecting Chom Mani in Nong Khai Province, Thailand, with Dong Phosy in Hadxayfong District, Vientiane, Laos. This landmark project stands as a profound symbol of international cooperation, funded entirely by the Australian Government as a gift to the people of Thailand and Laos to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties. The bridge was officially inaugurated on April 8, 1994, in a historic ceremony presided over by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) of Thailand and the then-President of the Lao PDR.

Engineered with high-strength prestressed concrete using the balanced cantilever method, the bridge spans a total length of 1,174 meters. Its most unique architectural feature is the inclusion of a 1-meter gauge railway track running through the center of the bridge, flanked by vehicle traffic lanes. This track connects Nong Khai Railway Station directly to Khamsavath Station in Vientiane, positioning the bridge as the primary artery of the Indochina transport network. This dual-purpose design has drastically improved logistics efficiency, streamlining the movement of goods from Thai seaports into Laos and beyond to Chinese markets.

Beyond its economic significance, the bridge is one of Thailand’s busiest overland border crossings, serving as the main gateway for international tourists to visit the cultural landmarks of Vientiane. The immigration areas on both sides are well-equipped with duty-free shops, transport services, and tourist information centers. For decades, this bridge has done more than just span the Mekong River; it has served as a testament to the enduring bond and shared prosperity between the two nations, fostering sustainable regional growth within the ASEAN community.
