“A historic Rama V-era monument housing heroes' ashes; this central Nong Khai landmark hosts grand annual celebrations every March, honoring bravery against the Haw rebels.”

The Prap Ho Monument is a significant historical landmark and a symbol of pride for the people of Nong Khai. It was erected to commemorate the bravery and sacrifices of the soldiers, police officers, and volunteers who lost their lives during the Haw Wars between 1885 and 1886. During the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), the Chinese Haw rebels invaded the Laotian territories and advanced toward Thailand's northeastern border. Under the strategic command of Prince Prachak Sinlapakhom, the combined Thai forces successfully defeated the rebels in the decisive battle of Thung Chiang Kham, driving them out of the region.

The monument was originally located at Wat Pho Chai but was later moved in 1951 to its current prominent location in front of the old Nong Khai City Hall. Architecturally, the monument is a rectangular stupa with indented corners (Yor Mum Mai Sip Song style) ending in a sharp spire. The base of the monument serves as a reliquary, housing the cremated remains of the fallen heroes. On each of the four sides of the base, there are inscriptions in four languages—Thai, English, Chinese, and Lao—honoring the fallen and providing a historical account of the conflict for visitors and future generations to remember.

Every year on March 5th, which marks the anniversary of the victory over the Haw rebels, Nong Khai province hosts a grand commemorative festival. The event features merit-making ceremonies, traditional homage dances performed by hundreds of locals, and a spectacular multimedia light-and-sound show reenacting the historical battles. The Prap Ho Monument stands today not only as a historical site but also as the spiritual heart of the province, representing the courage of those who defended the nation's sovereignty along the Mekong River.
