“Rare 75-million-year-old fossilized shells by the sea. Exposed during low tide. Scenic seaside view. A significant geological site in Thailand.”
Susan Hoi, also known as the Shell Cemetery or Fossil Shell Beach, is one of Krabi's most unique natural wonders. Located within Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, this geological site features large slabs of fossilized freshwater snail shells that are estimated to be between 40 to 75 million years old. These fossilized layers, formed from the accumulation and compression of ancient shells, appear as solid stone platforms visible at the shore during low tide.
The site is not only geologically important but also visually captivating. During low tide, visitors can walk along the ancient fossil beds, clearly observing the intricate shell details embedded in stone. The beach area also offers panoramic sea views, making it an ideal location for photography and nature appreciation.
To support tourism, the site includes a visitor center, restrooms, local food stalls, and souvenir shops. Informational signs in both Thai and English provide geological insights, making Susan Hoi a great destination for families, students, or anyone curious about Earth's natural history.
Its proximity to Ao Nang and Krabi town makes it a convenient half-day trip. A visit to Susan Hoi offers a blend of education, sightseeing, and a touch of prehistoric wonder – a must-see for anyone exploring southern Thailand.
