“ Thai literary plant species with educational signage, a lush and fertile Dong Bang I forest, and nature trails with wooden walkways for forest exploration. ”

The Botanical Literature Garden is located within the Dong Bang I National Reserved Forest in Nong Phok District, Roi Et Province. This area is an important natural forest in northeastern Thailand, rich in wild plant species, wildlife, and a mixed dry evergreen–deciduous forest ecosystem. The garden was established based on the concept of conserving Thailand’s plant genetic resources while also serving as a learning center for literature and cultural heritage. What makes the Roi Et Botanical Literature Garden unique compared to general botanical gardens is its focus on “plants mentioned in Thai classical literature.” The garden collects and cultivates plant species referenced in major literary works such as the Ramakien, Khun Chang Khun Phaen, Phra Aphai Mani, and Inao. These plants are grown on-site and organized according to their literary context, allowing visitors to connect botanical knowledge with cultural and literary dimensions in a tangible way.

The landscape design of the garden is carefully integrated with the original natural environment of the Dong Bang I forest. It features walking trails and elevated wooden boardwalks that allow visitors to access deeper forest areas without disturbing the surrounding ecosystem. These trails lead visitors through forest canopies, natural streams, and areas of high biodiversity. In terms of educational value, the garden provides detailed plant information signage, including scientific names, local names, botanical characteristics, natural habitats, and literary references related to each species. This transforms the area into a “Living Botanical Museum,” where real plants in their natural environment serve as learning resources.

Beyond its role as a nature-based tourist attraction, the Roi Et Botanical Literature Garden also functions as an important center for botanical education and research in northeastern Thailand. It serves as a field study site for students, researchers, and academics studying ecology, plant conservation, and the relationship between plants and Thai cultural heritage. The area also plays a significant role in conserving watershed forests and the lower Chi River basin ecosystem. It helps maintain soil moisture, reduce biodiversity loss, and support long-term forest restoration. In addition, it serves as a recreational space for local communities and eco-tourism visitors.Overall, the Roi Et Botanical Literature Garden is more than just a botanical garden. It is an integrated space combining nature, science, literature, and conservation—reflecting the deep relationship between humans and the environment through a uniquely Thai cultural and ecological perspective, especially representative of the Isan region.
