“Pay homage to the statue of Suthep Ruesi, regarded as the father of Lamphun’s history, learn the legendary conch-shaped city planning of Hariphunchai, and enjoy elevated views of the Asian Highway linking past and present.”

Suthep Ruesi, also known as Wasuthep Hermit, is the most important figure in the legend of Hariphunchai’s founding. He practiced asceticism on Doi Ucchubannaphot (present-day Doi Suthep) and used his staff to draw the city boundary in the shape of a conch shell along the Kuang River—symbolizing prosperity and auspiciousness.

As he devoted himself to deep meditation and avoided worldly affairs, he invited Queen Chamadevi, daughter of King Chakrawat of Lopburi, to rule Hariphunchai. He also played a key role in helping establish Buddhism firmly in the new kingdom.

Location & Background

The monument is situated at Doi Ti, along the Asian Super Highway near the entrance to Wat Doi Ti, marking the gateway into Lamphun city. It now stands beside the Kruba Srivichai Monument.

Originally, the monument was located in front of the Lamphun Provincial Hall before being relocated to its present site to better reflect its historical importance and public reverence.

Significance

Suthep Ruesi is honored as the “spiritual father and founder of Lamphun.” His monument standing alongside that of Kruba Srivichai—who later restored and preserved the region—symbolizes gratitude toward both the creator and the guardian of the city. Today, Doi Ti is considered one of Lamphun’s most spiritually significant landmarks.
