Doi Khamo is an extinct ancient volcano, giving it a distinctive inverted-pot shape. The word “Khamo” comes from an old northern term meaning “clay pot.” For centuries, the mountain has been regarded as a sacred landmark of Lamphun.

Royal Sacred Water Source
At the summit lies a natural rock basin that holds water year-round, even during the dry season. This holy water plays an important role in the annual Wat Phra That Hariphunchai bathing ceremony and has been selected as one of the sacred water sources used in Thai Royal Coronation rituals.

A Journey of Faith
The ascent follows a long concrete staircase that climbs steeply along the mountainside. Along the way, visitors pass through lush mixed deciduous forest and experience cooler air as they gain elevation, making the climb both physically challenging and spiritually meaningful.

Buddha Footprint Shrine
Besides the holy spring, the summit also features a replica Buddha footprint and a small chedi, where visitors can pay respects and seek blessings for good fortune.

How to Get There

• By Car: From Highway No. 11, enter the Northern Industrial Estate area and head toward Makuea Chae and Mae Thi Reservoir. A paved road leads all the way to the foot of the mountain.

• Important Rule: Women are not allowed to approach the edge of the holy spring basin (but may pay respects in designated areas).

• Health Note: Not recommended for visitors with knee problems or heart conditions due to steep final steps.

• What to Bring: Drinking water, inhaler, and towel — there are no shops at the top.

• Best Time to Visit: Start climbing between 06:30 – 07:30 AM to avoid midday heat.
