“Close-up hornbill habitat, open zoo with diverse wildlife, and a peaceful Lam Pao Dam view with cool breezes all day.”
Lam Pao Nature and Wildlife Study Station locally known as “Suan Sa-on” is a large conservation area located within the Thadong Mae Khon National Reserved Forest. Covering more than 1,400 rai, it lies next to the Lam Pao Reservoir, forming a highly diverse ecosystem of dry dipterocarp forest, riparian forest, and wetlands that support a wide variety of wildlife. The site was established primarily for wildlife conservation, rehabilitation, and breeding programs, especially for species that are declining in the wild. It also serves as a research and educational center for students, academics, and researchers, while remaining open to the public as a nature learning destination.
The area is designed as a conservation-oriented open zoo with minimal animal captivity, featuring naturalistic habitats, shaded walking trails, observation points, and supervised feeding zones. One of the main highlights is the hornbill population, which can often be seen due to the rich forest ecosystem and abundant natural food sources. In addition to hornbills, the area is home to various wildlife species such as serow, mouse deer, macaques, gibbons, as well as seasonal migratory and aquatic birds. This makes it an important bird-watching site in central northeastern Thailand, especially during early morning and late afternoon when animals are most active.
Another highlight is the surrounding landscape connected to the Lam Pao Reservoir, creating a scenic “forest-by-the-water” environment with cool breezes throughout the day. It is ideal for relaxation, photography, and peaceful nature-based tourism. In terms of management, the station emphasizes the concept of “learning alongside conservation,” with educational signage and interpretive exhibits about wildlife, ecosystems, and environmental importance, rather than entertainment-style zoo displays.
