“View ancient ship paintings on limestone walls and witness traditional bird's nest harvesting amidst the stunning emerald waters of Phi Phi Leh, Krabi”
Viking Cave is located on the northeastern side of Phi Phi Leh Island, within Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park in Krabi Province. The cave is a विशाल limestone formation shaped by marine erosion, featuring a high vaulted ceiling and adorned with striking stalactites and stalagmites. Its most distinctive feature, however, is a series of ancient wall paintings depicting various types of vessels, including Arabian dhows, European sailing ships, Chinese junks, and steamships. These paintings are believed to have been created by seafarers who once used the cave as a temporary shelter from monsoon storms. Some of the ship illustrations resemble early European vessels, which inspired the name “Viking Cave.”
In addition to its historical significance, Viking Cave is one of the most important concession sites for edible bird’s nest harvesting in Krabi. The cave serves as a natural habitat for large colonies of swiftlets, whose nests are highly prized in international markets. To protect both the ecological balance and the nesting birds—especially during breeding seasons—access to the interior of the cave is strictly prohibited. Visitors are not allowed to enter or climb into the cave and may only observe and photograph it from boats stationed near the entrance.
The surrounding scenery is equally captivating, with crystal-clear emerald waters contrasting against dramatic grey limestone cliffs and lush green vegetation. The nearby waters are rich in marine life, including coral reefs and schools of fish, making this area a frequent stop for sightseeing tours. Viking Cave is typically included in island-hopping itineraries around the Phi Phi Islands, often visited en route to renowned destinations such as Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon. It stands as a remarkable site where natural beauty, local livelihood, and maritime history converge.
