“The Maha Sarakham City Pillar Shrine is considered a sacred place and is a place of worship and reverence for the people of Maha Sarakham province.”

Maha Sarakham City Pillar Shrine is a spiritual center and an important symbol of the founding of Maha Sarakham city. It is closely linked to the city’s establishment history around 1865 (B.E. 2408), a period when administrative systems in the lower Northeastern region of Thailand were being formally organized. The shrine was built as a focal point for the emotional and spiritual stability of the local people, reflecting the concept of a “city pillar” that represents not only a physical pillar but also the core energy of the city in terms of belief, authority, and communal harmony.Historically, the founding of Maha Sarakham was led by its first governor, Thao Singharaat (Thao Mahachai), who established the city and ordered the construction of the city pillar as a spiritual center for the community.

Beliefs associated with the shrine are a blend of traditional Thai animism, the concept of city guardian spirits, and strong Chinese cultural influence, which is evident in both rituals and architectural design.Inside the shrine stands the city pillar as the central sacred object, along with the image of Chao Pho Lak Mueang, who is believed by locals to protect the city and bring peace, prosperity, and stability. The shrine’s current architecture is Chinese-influenced, featuring dragon motifs and red-and-gold decorations that symbolize prosperity, good fortune, and protection.

Every year, the shrine hosts the City Pillar Festival during the first lunar day of the fifth lunar month. The event includes a ceremonial procession around the city, water-blessing rituals for the pillar, and cultural performances that reflect strong local faith and tradition. In terms of social function, the shrine is not only a sacred site but also a community hub, a city landmark, and a symbolic space that unites the people of Maha Sarakham into a shared cultural identity.
