“Experience a unique journey by train through Khun Tan Tunnel, then hike to Y.4 – Mon Song Klong viewpoint, where you can enjoy stunning 360-degree mountain views and stay overnight surrounded by one of the most peaceful pine forests in Northern Thailand.”
Doi Khun Tan Summit (Y.4) is the ultimate destination for hikers seeking to conquer the “roof” of Doi Khun Tan National Park. Rising to approximately 1,373 meters, the journey to the top is not only a nature adventure but also a walk through history, tracing the legacy of Thailand’s northern railway development alongside changing forest ecosystems.
A Historic Strategic Trail
The hike begins at the park headquarters, where forestry accommodations are located. After about 1.5 kilometers, you will reach Y.1 (Strategic Point 1), formerly a railway guesthouse area. The trail continues through four historical levels (Y.1–Y.4), each reflecting stories from missionary settlements, railway engineers, and notable visitors from the past.
A Transition of Forest Ecosystems
Along the trail, visitors witness a clear shift in vegetation — from mixed deciduous forest at lower elevations to dense three-needle pine forests from Y.2 onward. The cool climate and seasonal wildflowers create a scenic and refreshing trekking environment year-round.
Mon Song Klong — The Reward of the Journey
At the summit, known as “Mon Song Klong,” you’ll find a wide rocky viewpoint once used for strategic observation. Today, it is the most spectacular viewpoint in the park, offering 360-degree panoramic views across Lamphun and Lampang. Visitors can see sunrise on the Lampang side and sunset over Lamphun, often accompanied by a beautiful sea of mist.
Accommodation at the Summit Area
Near the summit, facilities include 7 park bungalows, camping grounds, and rental tents. Staying overnight allows visitors to fully enjoy sunrise views, cool mountain air, and the tranquil pine forest atmosphere.
