“A natural vertical shaft cave featuring a massive golden Buddha statue. It is a peaceful retreat for meditation and a strategic geographical viewpoint with 360-degree views of the island.”
Chakrapong Cave is a natural and spiritual site located on the mountain ridge above the Chao Pho Khao Yai Shrine. The most prominent feature of this cave is its natural skylight. This large opening in the ceiling allows sunlight to shine through the cave all day long. Inside, you will find a large Golden Reclining Buddha statue. Local people call it Luang Pho Lueang (The Yellow Buddha) and hold it in high respect.
A unique feature of Chakrapong Cave is the constant sea breeze that flows through the structure. Because it is located at a high elevation, the cave stays cool and well-ventilated. In addition to the large Reclining Buddha, there are small paths connecting different chambers. Visitors can see various Buddhist statues and natural stalactites. It is a very quiet atmosphere, ideal for meditation and escaping the busy city life.
At the front of the cave, visitors can enjoy a panoramic viewpoint. It is one of the most beautiful views on the island. From here, you can see the vibrant red roof of the Chinese shrine, the local fishing village, and many cargo ships anchored in the bay. On a clear day, the sunlight reflecting off the water looks like a masterpiece painting.
Spiritual and Natural Architecture Inside Chakrapong Cave, the Buddha statues are placed according to the limestone cave's structure. The large opening on the ceiling is a geological phenomenon caused by the collapse of the cave roof in the past. This opening works as a natural ventilation system and light source, keeping the cave dry and fresh. Besides the Reclining Buddha, there are other statues of famous monks placed on the rock ledges. The monks of Wat Tham Chakrapong maintain this area as a quiet place for meditation.
Panoramic Views and Historical Connection From the area in front of the cave, which is the highest point on this side of the mountain, visitors can see the "strategic defense line" of Koh Sichang. In the past, this spot was used to monitor all ships entering and leaving the bay. This location is important for both religion and geography. Visiting Chakrapong Cave is a complete experience that includes studying natural caves in a marine park and visiting a sacred site respected by the local fishing community. It offers deep information about both nature and local culture.
