“ Kaeng Loeng Chan is the green lung of Maha Sarakham, offering a shady and pleasant atmosphere with running and cycling lanes, a beautiful sunset viewpoint, and a variety of recreational activities. ”

Kaeng Loeng Chan Reservoir is located in Mueang Maha Sarakham District, Maha Sarakham Province. Originally, the area was a natural wetland in a low-lying basin in the northeastern region, functioning as a seasonal water retention area during the rainy season, with water remaining for extended periods depending on the terrain. The word “Loeng” in the Isan dialect refers to a low-lying marsh or waterlogged area, while “Kaeng” refers to rocky rapids or natural formations that obstruct water flow. “Chan” comes from the Chan tree (Afzelia xylocarpa), which once grew abundantly in the area. Together, the name “Kaeng Loeng Chan” reflects the natural characteristics of the landscape.Later, the area was developed into a reservoir for irrigation purposes, mainly to store water during the rainy season and distribute it for agriculture during the dry season. It also supports domestic water use for the Maha Sarakham community and helps reduce flooding in surrounding areas.

Over time, the reservoir area was further developed into a public recreational space. A long loop road was constructed around the reservoir, along with dedicated running and cycling lanes separated from main traffic roads to ensure user safety.Today, Kaeng Loeng Chan has become one of the most important exercise and leisure areas in Maha Sarakham. In the mornings and evenings, many people come here for jogging, walking, and cycling, enjoying the shaded environment and the large body of water that creates a relaxing atmosphere. In addition to fitness activities, the area is also a popular scenic viewpoint, especially during sunset, when golden light reflects over the wide water surface, creating beautiful scenery that attracts both tourists and photographers.

Around the reservoir, there are local restaurants, street food stalls, and small cafés serving visitors, such as som tam (papaya salad), grilled chicken, local dishes, and beverages. These businesses help support the local economy and make the area more lively, especially in the evenings and on weekends.Furthermore, the area plays an important environmental role as a habitat for aquatic animals, water birds, and riparian plants, helping maintain ecological balance in the urban water system and serving as an important green space that reduces heat and pollution in the city.Overall, Kaeng Loeng Chan is not only a water reservoir for agriculture but also a multifunctional space combining nature, recreation, exercise, local economy, and urban ecology. It serves as the “green lung of Maha Sarakham,” playing a significant role both physically and socially in a sustainable way.
