“Authentic traditional Isan houses on display include merchant houses, farmers’ houses, raft houses, and traditional Isan huts, as well as ox carts and agricultural tools used in daily livelihoods.”

Isan House Museum is a cultural learning center under the supervision of the Isan Arts and Culture Research Institute, Mahasarakham University. It plays an important role in conserving, preserving, and disseminating knowledge in anthropology, ethnology, vernacular architecture, and the traditional way of life of the Isan people in the past. The exhibition area is an open-air museum where authentic traditional wooden houses from various communities have been relocated and preserved in a single site. This allows visitors to learn through real-life experience, not only about architectural structures but also about the social and cultural contexts related to the Isan way of life. The houses on display are categorized according to social status and living patterns, such as merchant or noble houses that reflect higher social classes with elevated structures and refined wooden craftsmanship, simple farmers’ houses representing everyday rural life, raft houses reflecting settlement patterns connected to waterways, and temporary huts used during farming seasons.

Inside the houses and exhibition areas, a variety of local artifacts are displayed, including bamboo weaving products, traditional fishing equipment, agricultural tools, weaving instruments, and everyday household items. These exhibits reflect a subsistence-based economy and the traditional household-level lifestyle of Isan communities in the past.In addition, there are permanent and rotating exhibition buildings presenting further knowledge on Isan silk and cotton textiles, folk music such as khaen, phin, and pong lang, as well as mor lam, along with palm-leaf manuscripts, ancient scripts, beliefs, rituals, and local folklore that reflect the cultural roots of the region.Overall, the Isan House Museum is a living cultural learning space that helps visitors understand the relationship between humans, society, and the environment in the Isan region in a systematic way. It is highly suitable for students, researchers, and tourists who are interested in deeply exploring Thailand’s cultural heritage.
