“Experience over 100 years of reed mat weaving wisdom—from planting reeds to hand-weaving. Shop a variety of OTOP products and immerse yourself in the B-W-R On Tour community of home, temple, and school.”

Ban Paeng Reed Mat Weaving Village is a traditional handicraft community with cultural roots dating back to around 1826. The name “Ban Paeng” reflects the area’s former landscape, once densely covered with Paeng trees, indicating the region’s historical ecological richness. At the heart of the community lies the “reed mat weaving wisdom,” a body of knowledge passed down through generations, deeply embedded in both economic activity and local ways of life. Originally, reed mats were produced for household use—such as sleeping and sitting mats—and were also used as barter goods in nearby communities. Over time, this evolved into a more structured community-based economy through the establishment of the “Ban Paeng Women’s Reed Mat Weaving Group.”

A key turning point in the village’s development was the introduction of “round-stem reeds (Kai)” as a primary raw material. These reeds are notably stronger, more flexible, and more durable than traditional varieties. The community experimented with cultivating them in nearby wetland areas, enabling better control over raw material quality from upstream to downstream production. This significantly improved product standards. In terms of production, Ban Paeng’s weaving process is not merely a craft but a “knowledge-based production chain,” consisting of reed cultivation, harvesting, drying, natural dyeing using local plants, and artistic pattern design. This entire process reflects a distinct blend of traditional Isan identity and contemporary design sensibilities.

Today, the community has expanded beyond traditional mats into modern lifestyle and OTOP products, including fashion bags, cushions, home décor items, and padded reed mats designed for modern usability, while still preserving its traditional craftsmanship identity. The village is also closely connected with Wat Chai Prasit, a spiritual and communal center that serves as both a religious site and a hub for local activities. This reflects the “B-W-R On Tour” development concept, integrating home, temple, and school into a sustainable community ecosystem.
