“Wat Phra Non features a sacred Lanna-style Reclining Buddha, a rare golden teakwood viharn adorned with intricate wood carvings and colored glass, a bell-shaped Lanna chedi, and a local museum reflecting Phrae’s historical heritage.”

Wat Phra Non is one of Phrae’s ancient temples, although its exact founding date remains unknown. It is believed to have been established alongside the founding of Phrae city and later restored by several rulers of Phrae, underscoring its historical role as a royal temple in the city’s central district and a spiritual anchor for local communities.

The temple’s most outstanding architectural feature is its golden teakwood viharn, a rare and valuable example of traditional Lanna craftsmanship. Constructed almost entirely of teakwood, the viharn is decorated with finely carved floral and vine motifs on the gable, complemented by colored glass inlays that shimmer beautifully in sunlight—showcasing the exceptional skills of Phrae artisans.

Enshrined within the temple complex is the Reclining Buddha (Phra Non), measuring approximately 5 meters in length and housed in a separate ordination hall from the teak viharn. The Buddha image displays a serene and gentle expression typical of Lanna art and has long been revered by locals who believe that paying respects here brings peace, harmony, and well-being.

Behind the viharn stands a bell-shaped Lanna-style chedi, enhancing the temple’s sacred atmosphere and visual harmony. In addition, the Phra Non Museum within the temple grounds preserves ancient artifacts, household items, and historical objects related to Phrae’s former rulers and traditional local life.

Situated on Phra Non Road, one of the most culturally significant streets in Phrae Old Town, the temple is surrounded by traditional wooden houses and long-established communities. This setting makes Wat Phra Non a living reflection of the close relationship between religion, urban life, and the identity of Phrae—perfectly concluding a walking tour of the old city district.
