“Wat Phra That Phra Lo features a revered Lanna-style pagoda, the Phra Lo–Phra Phuean–Phra Phaeng monument, and strong ties to Thailand’s greatest classical love epic.”

Wat Phra That Phra Lo is located on the lowland plain of the Kalhong River, locally known as the Song River, an area once identified as the ancient City of Srong. Historical evidence suggests that the city was established around the 18th–19th Buddhist centuries and played a significant role in the Mae Yom river basin, long before becoming the legendary setting of Thailand’s classic epic Lilit Phra Lo.

Architecture and Age of the Pagoda

The Phra Lor Pagoda is approximately 400 years old. It is a Lanna-style bell-shaped chedi with twelve indented corners, standing on a multi-tiered square base and adorned with intricate stucco decorations in radiant gold. The stupa enshrines relics of the Lord Buddha, and local belief holds that the remains of Phra Lo, Phra Phuean, and Phra Phaeng are also enshrined here, making it a spiritual center deeply revered by the people of Song District.

Tragedy and the Memorial of Nakhon Mansarong

A key highlight of the temple is the monument of Phra Lo, Phra Phuean, and Phra Phaeng, constructed by the Fine Arts Department as a memorial of Nakhon Mansarong. The statues face the Song River, symbolizing the final scene of the legendary love tragedy. Visitors often come to pay respect and pray for blessings related to love, loyalty, and faithfulness.

Museum and Traces of the Ancient City

Within the temple grounds is a local museum displaying archaeological artifacts excavated from the ancient Srong City area, including ceramics, fragments of ancient bricks, and historical evidence reflecting the prosperity of the former settlement.

The Royal Pheasant of Phra Lo

Scattered throughout the temple are sculptures of the royal pheasant, a symbolic character in Lilit Phra Lor who led Phra Lor into his fateful romance with Phra Phuean and Phra Phaeng. These artworks enhance the atmosphere, allowing visitors to experience Thai classical literature alongside tangible historical heritage.
