“Admire the unique alignment of five golden chedis, explore the history of ancient Wiang Ha Lang, and pay respects inside a viharn adorned with intricate Lanna decorative art.”
Wat Phra That Ha Duang is an ancient and highly revered temple in Li District, Lamphun, best known for its five golden chedis standing gracefully in a row on the historic grounds of Wiang Ha Lang, once an important satellite city of the Hariphunchai Kingdom.
According to legend, Queen Chamadevi, ruler of Hariphunchai, heard reports from local villagers about the frequent appearance of five glowing crystal orbs. When she personally visited the site at night, she witnessed radiant lights floating above five earthen mounds. Locals believed these were “Metto Dhatu”, sacred traces of water from when the Buddha washed His hands, with streams flowing from His five fingers onto the earth.
Deeply moved by faith, the queen ordered five chedis to be built to enshrine the sacred spots. These structures later became the iconic five stupas that give the temple its name and spiritual significance.
The temple grounds still preserve traces of the ancient Wiang Ha Lang city, including remains of old settlement areas and landscape features that reflect its former historical importance.
Today, the temple offers a peaceful atmosphere ideal for worship and reflection. Every year on April 20, a grand annual water-pouring ceremony is held to honor the five chedis, attracting many local devotees and visitors.
