“Learn about humanitarian history at Ratchakarun Pavilion and relax on Khao Lan Beach, a clean and quiet shore that was once a site for global aid.”
Ratchakarun Center, Thai Red Cross Society ormerly known as Thai Red Cross Center, Khao Lan," is a site of great historical importance not only for Trat Province but also internationally. In the past, around 1979, this area was established as a refugee center to assist hundreds of thousands of Cambodians fleeing war into Thailand. It was founded through the royal grace of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother, in her capacity as President of the Thai Red Cross Society, who compassionately ordered the establishment of this center to provide shelter, food, and medical care to the suffering. Today, this area has been renovated into a recreational and historical learning site that maintains the atmosphere of mercy and international friendship that truly occurred in the past.
The architectural heart of this place is the Ratchakarun Pavilion, a museum exhibiting historical events from that era. Inside, there are displays of the refugees' living conditions, utensils, and authentic photographs reflecting the hardships and one of the greatest humanitarian efforts in Thai history. Walking through this museum allows visitors to feel the loyalty and gratitude for the royal mercy shown to fellow humans regardless of race or religion. Furthermore, the center's grounds feature beautifully decorated gardens with various plant species and a shady herbal garden, ideal for nature studies and spending leisure time with family in a quiet and orderly atmosphere.
Another highlight not to be missed is Khao Lan Beach, a long shore running parallel to the center's grounds, known for its cleanliness and fine white sand. The sea here is clear with gentle waves, making it suitable for swimming and taking scenic walks. This beach maintains a high level of privacy without the overcrowding of entertainment or excessive commercialization, allowing tourists to fully absorb the beauty of nature. In the evening, visitors can witness the stunning sunset over the Trat sea. The beachfront area provides seating and camping zones for those wishing to stay overnight close to nature, which is well-secured by Thai Red Cross staff.
Ratchakarun Center also serves as a training and seminar hub with complete facilities, including modern accommodation buildings, meeting rooms, and outdoor activity areas. Visiting here is truly a combination of gaining knowledge and relaxation. Additionally, there are nature trails where you can observe coastal plants and various bird species living in the thickets around the center. The management, emphasizing cleanliness and greenery, makes it popular among health-conscious tourists and students visiting for Thai-Cambodian history. The significance of Ratchakarun Center is thus not only as a seaside tourist destination but as a witness to faith in humanitarian principles ready to tell a story of endless giving to all visitors.
