“ Explore ancient city walls, moats, and Ayutthaya-period temple ruins in the Old Kanchanaburi Town area, a significant historical site of the Nine Armies War ”

The Ancient Ruins of Old Kanchanaburi Town is an important historical area in western Thailand, once serving as the original location of Kanchanaburi before the city center was relocated to Pak Phraek in the present day. This site reflects Kanchanaburi’s historical role as a frontier town used to defend against Burmese invasions and as a key strategic link between Siam and the Three Pagodas Pass since the Ayutthaya period. The ancient town was designed as a fortress city, featuring a rectangular layout surrounded by moats and earthen embankments for military defense, strengthened by the natural landscape. Today, remnants of the moat and city walls can still be clearly seen, making it an important site for studying ancient urban planning in Thailand.

The old town area played a significant role in the Siam–Burma wars, particularly during the late Ayutthaya and early Rattanakosin periods, as Burmese armies frequently used the Three Pagodas Pass route for military campaigns. It is also associated with the Nine Armies War during the reign of King Rama I, making it a nationally important defensive frontier.Later, during the reign of King Rama III, the provincial capital was moved to Pak Phraek due to better transportation, trade, and administrative advantages. As a result, the old settlement in Lat Ya gradually became abandoned, leaving behind only moats, ancient walls, and temple ruins as historical evidence.

Within the area are several important archaeological sites, including Wat Khun Phaen, known for its bell-shaped chedi on a square base and brick ruins reflecting late Ayutthaya architecture, as well as its connection to the legendary Thai folktale Khun Chang Khun Phaen, making it a popular cultural attraction.Another key site is Wat Pa Lelai (Wat Kapang Bot), notable for its large brick mandapa showcasing late Ayutthaya architecture blended with local western Thai artistic styles. Wat Mae Mai features a Sri Lankan-style chedi and multiple religious foundations, preserving a quiet and distinctly ancient atmosphere.

Additionally, Wat Pratu Dan is believed to be linked to the old city’s defensive system, located near the original city gate and ancient wall line, with remaining brick foundations still visible today.Currently, the Ancient Ruins of Old Kanchanaburi Town are registered and protected by the Fine Arts Department of Thailand to preserve their historical and archaeological value. The site is suitable for visitors interested in Thai history, Siam–Burma warfare, ancient urban planning, Ayutthaya architecture, cultural tourism, and photography in a peaceful historical landscape.

  • By public transport: Take a local songthaew (shared pickup truck) on the Kanchanaburi–Lat Ya route or a minibus passing through Lat Ya Subdistrict from Kanchanaburi Bus Terminal. Get off at Lat Ya Market, then hire a motorcycle taxi to reach the ancient town area.
