“Ban Kao National Museum showcases various ancient artifacts and the prehistoric civilization of the world.”

Ban Kao National Museum is an important archaeological site in Thailand, located in Ban Kao Subdistrict, Mueang Kanchanaburi District, Kanchanaburi Province, along the Kwai Noi River. The area is highly significant in Southeast Asian archaeology because it contains some of the most complete evidence of Neolithic human society dating back approximately 3,000–4,000 years. The Ban Kao archaeological site first became known during World War II when Dr. H.R. van Heekeren, a Dutch archaeologist who was a prisoner of war in Thailand, surveyed the area and discovered important evidence such as stone tools and human skeletons. After the war, the Fine Arts Department conducted systematic excavations and confirmed that the site was an actual prehistoric settlement.

Based on the findings, researchers believe that the Ban Kao people lived in an early agricultural society. They settled along riverbanks to take advantage of natural resources, engaging in farming, hunting, and gathering. They also used more refined polished stone tools, reflecting technological development during that period. One of the most remarkable features of the site is the large number of human skeletons found with systematic burial practices. The bodies were often placed in specific positions and accompanied by grave goods such as shells, animal bone ornaments, and stone beads. This reflects beliefs in an afterlife and a more complex social structure.

Key artifacts discovered in the area include the distinctive tripod pottery known as the “Ban Kao pot,” various polished stone tools such as axes and chisels, and natural decorative objects. These findings confirm that the Ban Kao community had a relatively advanced level of both daily life and cultural development.Today, Ban Kao National Museum has been developed into a modern museum with organized exhibition zones and multimedia presentations. The exhibits cover topics from the origin of the world and human evolution to the lifestyle of the Ban Kao people, helping visitors clearly understand the historical context in a continuous narrative. With its strong archaeological and historical value, Ban Kao is regarded as one of the key sites for understanding prehistoric human development in Southeast Asia, and it serves as both an important academic resource and a valuable educational tourism destination.
