“Beautiful limestone waterfall in lush rainforest, shaded by giant Hopea trees. Serene atmosphere with clear cool water, perfect for trekking, nature study, and ultimate relaxation.”

Takhian Thong Waterfall is located within the Thungyai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary, in Sangkhlaburi District, Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand. This area is part of one of the most pristine western forests in Thailand, surrounded by the Tenasserim Mountains along the Thai-Myanmar border. The waterfall originates from a natural stream in the deep forest of Myanmar, flowing into Thailand via the Songkalia River, part of the headwaters of the Khwae Noi River. This ensures the waterfall has water flowing year-round, with particularly high volume and beauty during the rainy and late rainy seasons.

The most distinctive feature of Takhian Thong Waterfall is the water cascading down natural rock formations. Each tier features a wide rock platform, with water spreading out in small and large streams amidst a dense rainforest. Surrounded by bamboo groves, rattan, ferns, and numerous large trees, the area around the waterfall is cool and shady throughout the day. Visitors can wade through the water or walk along the stream to explore the different tiers of the waterfall, each offering unique natural features including shallow pools, rock platforms, and beautiful streams flowing through crevices. The main charm of this waterfall lies in its tranquility and pristine natural beauty, unlike larger, crowded waterfalls. The area surrounding the waterfall is largely undeveloped, lacking many buildings or amenities, allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere of the western forest up close. Along the hiking trail, you'll find a variety of forest plants, including mosses, ferns, and wild orchids that thrive in the humid forest environment. There's also a chance to spot small wild animals and several local bird species that inhabit the ecosystem of this protected area.

The journey to the waterfall is another highlight. From the Sangkhlaburi–Dan Chedi Sam Ong road, there's a turnoff onto a narrow, somewhat steep dirt road. After approximately 12 kilometers, some sections involve crossing streams, making it more suitable for 4x4 vehicles or pickup trucks than regular cars. Upon reaching a rest stop, visitors must continue on a 30-minute hike through a natural trail to reach the first tier of the waterfall. The trail is mostly flat, interspersed with wet sections during the rainy season, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and hikers.

Since Takhian Thong Waterfall is located within a wildlife sanctuary, visitors should strictly adhere to the area's rules, such as refraining from littering, bringing alcoholic beverages, and avoiding making loud noises that disturb nature. The best time to visit is between July and November, when the forests are lush and the waterfalls have plenty of water. However, if traveling during the rainy season, be sure to bring non-slip shoes and insect repellent, as some parts of the trail may be slippery and there may be leeches, which are a natural characteristic of the humid environment of the rainforest.
