“Marvel at translucent stalactites shaped like relics within spacious, cool chambers. These sparkling, active limestone formations offer stunning geological beauty inside Erawan National Park.”

Phra That Cave is one of the most beautiful and famous caves in Kanchanaburi Province. Located within Erawan National Park in Si Sawat District, it's nestled amidst the lush natural forests of the limestone mountains in western Thailand. The cave is approximately 12 kilometers from Erawan Waterfall and sits about 790 meters above sea level. The surrounding area is a pristine dry evergreen and bamboo forest, resulting in a cool climate almost year-round. Visitors must ascend a steep slope and stairs for about 600 meters before reaching the cave entrance. While the journey is somewhat strenuous, the path is lined with lush nature and the sounds of wild animals, making the climb into the cave a memorable part of the natural tourism experience.

Inside, Tham Phra That is approximately 200 meters long and is considered one of the most geologically well-preserved limestone caves in Thailand. Its main feature is the translucent stalactites and stalagmites, which reflect light and sparkle like glass crystals—a rarity in most caves. Some of the rocks have a creamy white color resembling relics or conch shells, hence the name "Tham Phra That" (Phra That Cave). The cave is divided into several chambers. Each chamber has its own unique shape and character, such as the Bell-Shaped Chamber, the Relic Chamber, the Likay Curtain Chamber, and the Coral Chamber, all formed by the accumulation of calcium carbonate minerals through natural processes over millions of years. Tourists will see massive stalagmites, stalactites in formation, and stalagmites still covered in water droplets, demonstrating that this is still a "living cave," or a cave where natural processes continue to occur.

The atmosphere inside the cave is peaceful, cool, and relatively dark because there is no permanent electrical system installed. This is to maintain the ecological balance and prevent damage to the stalactites and stalagmites. Therefore, all visitors must be accompanied by a park guide and use flashlights to appreciate the beauty inside the cave. The absence of permanent lighting allows the rock surfaces to be clearly visible, reflecting the flashlight beams and creating uniquely beautiful sights. In some areas, they resemble cave temples or large natural sculptures, making many feel like they are walking in an underground world full of natural art. In addition, the cave has good ventilation and is not excessively humid, making it relatively easy to explore compared to other large caves in Thailand.

Phra That Cave is also interesting for its local history and beliefs. Originally named "Dusit Mahima Cave," it was discovered by a hunter named Mr. Mak Boonthong before being explored and developed as a natural tourist attraction later on. Locals believe that some of the white rocks inside the cave resemble relics of the Buddha, hence the name "Tham Phra That" (Relic Cave). It has become a revered site, visited by many. Although it has gained popularity with tourists, the cave remains under strict protection by Erawan National Park to preserve its natural beauty.

Visiting Tham Phra That is ideal for those who enjoy nature, light adventure, and geology. Besides the stunning stalactites and stalagmites, visitors can experience the pristine forest and ecosystem surrounding Erawan National Park. The typical cave visit takes between 30 minutes and 1 hour, depending on physical fitness and time of day. Many tourists combine their trip with Erawan Waterfall, Srinakarin Dam, and other natural attractions in Si Sawat District, making Tham Phra That a significant nature-focused destination in Kanchanaburi Province, maintaining its stunning and unspoiled natural beauty.
