“A stunning white bell-shaped pagoda standing on a peaceful river island amidst lush mangrove forests, featuring nature trails for exploring biodiversity—a sacred Rayong landmark.”

Phra Chedi Klang Nam is an important historical site and one of the most famous symbols of Rayong Province. Located at the mouth of the Rayong River in Pak Nam Subdistrict, Mueang Rayong District, the pagoda originally stood on an island in the middle of the river mouth, hence its name. In the past, sailors and merchants traveling to Rayong used this pagoda as an important landmark to indicate their arrival in the city. Therefore, the pagoda has held significant importance in religious, transportation, and local history for the people of Rayong.

The pagoda was built during the reign of King Rama V, around 1873, by Phraya Srisamutphokchai Chitsongkram (Yaem), the governor of Rayong at the time. It is a white, bell-shaped pagoda in a Thai-style design, standing prominently above the river mouth. Although the surrounding area has changed due to sediment accumulation and land development, the pagoda continues to be preserved and restored to maintain its historical and cultural significance to Rayong Province. The image of the white pagoda amidst the mangrove forest and river remains an iconic image reflecting the unique identity of Rayong.

The area surrounding Phra Chedi Klang Nam has been developed into a natural tourist attraction and a recreational area for locals. A wooden boardwalk and nature trail wind through the lush mangrove forest. Visitors can observe the mangrove ecosystem, a nursery for many coastal aquatic animals such as fiddler crabs, mudskippers, and various species of shorebirds. The surrounding atmosphere is shady, peaceful, and ideal for walks, exercise, or nature photography, especially in the evening when the sunlight reflects off the water and mangrove forest, creating a breathtaking view.

Another important aspect making the pagoda in the middle of the water a spiritual center for the people of Rayong is the annual Wrapping the Pagoda with Cloth ceremony, held after the end of Buddhist Lent. This ancient tradition involves carrying a long red cloth to wrap around the pagoda, along with religious activities, folk art and cultural performances, local stalls, and various entertainments, making the area lively and a significant annual event for the province. Locals believe that participating in the event and paying homage to the pagoda brings good fortune and prosperity.

Today, the pagoda in the middle of the water is not just a religious site but also a landmark for tourism and nature education in Rayong province. Visitors can experience its historical value, the riverside community's way of life, and the richness of the mangrove ecosystem all in one place. With its tranquil atmosphere, convenient access, and proximity to Rayong city, the floating pagoda is an ideal place for relaxation, cultural tourism, and nature education.
