“Features 8-tiered emerald waterfalls in a pristine forest, lush nature trails, and stunning limestone cave systems perfect for adventurous exploration and peaceful nature relaxation.”
Khao Chamao-Khao Wong National Park is one of the most naturally abundant national parks in eastern Thailand, covering areas in Rayong Province and parts of Chanthaburi Province. The park's landscape consists of complex mountain ranges within the Banthat Mountain Range, filled with tropical rainforests, dry evergreen forests, and important natural water sources. The park boasts high biodiversity, including large trees, ferns, wild orchids, and a variety of wildlife such as gibbons, langurs, wild boars, squirrels, and numerous bird species. This makes it renowned as one of the most pristine forest areas in Rayong Province and a vital water source for surrounding communities.
The most famous tourist attraction is "Khao Chamao Waterfall", a large eight-tiered waterfall cascading down natural rock formations amidst a lush forest. Each tier has its own unique character and name, such as Wang Nueng, Wang Matcha, Pha Kluai Mai, and the highest tier, Pha Sawan. The waterfall is famous for its clear, emerald green water year-round, especially the "Wang Matcha" area, a natural pool teeming with Siamese carp, which tourists can clearly see swimming in the crystal-clear water – a signature image of the park. Access to each tier of the waterfall is via wooden walkways. The natural trails and humid rainforest create a cool and comfortable atmosphere throughout the journey, even during the summer.
The nature trails within the park are popular among hikers and nature lovers because the forest has been well-preserved in its original state. Visitors can experience large trees, vines, and the sounds of wild animals living in their natural habitat. Along the trails, you can spot colorful butterflies, rare birds, and endemic plants that thrive in the humid areas of the eastern forest. Furthermore, the park is particularly lush during the rainy season, with waterfalls having the most abundant and beautiful water flow, making it the most popular time for tourists. However, some waterfalls may be temporarily closed for safety reasons if the current is too strong.
Another significant highlight of the park is "Khao Wong," a natural circular limestone mountain range. Inside, numerous limestone caves are scattered through the forest, such as Khao Wong Cave, Phra Cave, and other smaller caves with beautiful natural stalactites and stalagmites. Some areas within the caves are highly humid and feature interesting geological formations, making them ideal for those who enjoy exploring nature and studying cave ecosystems. However, guided tours are recommended for safety in some areas due to the potentially slippery and complex terrain in certain seasons.
Besides nature tourism, Khao Chamao-Khao Wong National Park is also a popular destination for camping enthusiasts and families. Within the park, there are campsites, bungalows, and basic facilities to accommodate tourists who wish to stay overnight amidst a peaceful atmosphere and fresh air. In the mornings, you can experience the wisps of mist above the treetops and hear the birdsong from the surrounding forest. It is ideal for short breaks, nature walks, and ecotourism for those who want to experience the true nature of Eastern Thailand.
