“Ancient volcanic crater, lava suspension bridge, Phra Suphattharabophit, 360° city viewpoint, and rare plant nature trails”
Khao Kradong Forest Park is one of the most significant geological attractions in northeastern Thailand. It originated from volcanic eruptions in the distant past, with geologists estimating its formation to date back hundreds of thousands to over a million years ago, during a period of intense tectonic activity and high magma pressure in the region.
The former name, “Phanom Kradong,” comes from the Khmer language—“Phanom” meaning mountain and “Kradong” referring to a turtle shell—describing the dome-like shape of the terrain formed by layers of cooled lava that eventually solidified into basalt rock.
A key geological feature of the site is a maar crater, formed by explosive interactions between rising magma and groundwater. This process caused a large collapse, creating a crescent-shaped depression. Today, it has transformed into a natural reservoir, offering a unique and tranquil landscape. Visitors can observe the crater’s structure and surrounding rock layers from designated viewpoints.
One of the park’s highlights is the lava suspension bridge, which stretches across the crater. It provides a bird’s-eye view of the volcanic formation, allowing visitors to better understand the geological structure. The surrounding area also features various volcanic materials, including:
- Basalt – an igneous rock formed from rapidly cooled lava
- Pumice – lightweight, porous “floating stone” created by gas-rich eruptions
- Volcanic fragments – scattered debris from past eruptions
These elements make the park a natural outdoor classroom for those interested in geology and landscape formation.
From a cultural perspective, the summit—approximately 265 meters above sea level—is home to Phra Suphattharabophit, a large Buddha statue in the Mara-vijaya posture. It is a major spiritual landmark and a symbol of Buriram Province. Visitors can pay respects while enjoying panoramic 360-degree views of the city, especially stunning during sunrise and sunset.
There are two main ways to reach the summit:
- 297-step Naga staircase – ideal for those seeking a scenic and physically engaging climb
- Access road – allows visitors to drive up to the top, suitable for all ages
The park is shaded by native vegetation and rare plant species such as “Sirindhorna Varee,” and features well-organized nature trails with interpretive information on ecology and geology.
Beyond its scientific significance, the park also serves as a popular recreational destination for locals. Open spaces are available for sightseeing, exercise, and relaxation—particularly in the late afternoon when the weather is cooler and sunset views are at their best.
With its unique combination of natural beauty, geological importance, and cultural heritage, Khao Kradong Forest Park stands as a defining landmark of Buriram Province, suitable for casual travelers, students, and anyone interested in immersive, place-based learning experiences.
