“A beautiful sunset viewpoint with a peaceful atmosphere and cool breeze. There are lakeside pavilions for relaxing, ideal for picnics and evening photography, and you may also spot ducks during the low-water season.”
Thung Laem Reservoir is an important irrigation reservoir that plays a key role in supporting agriculture in Nang Rong District. It functions as a water storage and distribution source for surrounding farmlands, especially during the dry season when water is essential for rice cultivation and other crops in Than on Hak Subdistrict and nearby areas.
In terms of landscape, the surrounding area has been developed into a community recreation space. The dam crest is long and wide, suitable for walking, jogging, and enjoying panoramic views of the reservoir and distant mountain ranges. During the evening, sunlight reflecting on the water creates a distinctive and picturesque scene.
The ecosystem around the reservoir is relatively healthy. During the dry season, exposed shallow areas become feeding grounds for various water birds, especially ducks and local bird species. This makes the area an informal birdwatching spot for locals and nature photographers.
Socially, the reservoir has historically been a center for community activities such as Loy Krathong festivals, traditional local performances, and boat racing events, reflecting the strong connection between the local people and their water resources. Although some activities have decreased over time, the area is still occasionally used for community events.
Today, due to its location along Highway 24, Thung Laem Reservoir has become a convenient stopover for travelers, especially those heading to major attractions in Buriram such as Phanom Rung Historical Park. Nearby, there are local food stalls and community shops that support tourism while maintaining a simple and natural atmosphere.
