“Enshrining Luang Pho Phra Chao Ong Tue, the province's largest bronze Lan Xang Buddha. A sacred spiritual center revered by Thai and Lao people alike.”

Wat Sri Chomphu Ong Tue commonly known by locals as Wat Phra Chao Ong Tue, is situated along the banks of the Nam Mong stream in Tha Bo District. It is a royal temple of immense historical and spiritual significance to the people of both Thailand and Laos. According to historical records and local legends, the Luang Pho Phra Chao Ong Tue Buddha image was cast during the reign of King Setthathirath of the Lan Xang Kingdom around 1562 AD. The statue was crafted from a precious bronze alloy containing gold, silver, and copper. The name ong tue refers to an ancient northeastern unit of weight for metal, where one "Tue" equals approximately 1,000 kilograms (or 10,000 kilograms in some accounts), signifying the massive scale and weight of this sacred icon.

In terms of Buddhist artistry, Luang Pho Phra Chao Ong Tue is a Buddha image in the Subduing Mara posture, showcasing a flawless blend of Lan Xang and Chiang Saen artistic styles. The statue measures 3.29 meters across the lap and stands 4 meters tall, serving as the principal Buddha image within the masterfully decorated ordination hall (Ubosot). For centuries, the image has been renowned for its perceived sanctity, with devotees often seeking blessings for prosperity, career success, and protection from harm. The people of Nong Khai hold a deep-seated belief that the Buddha image serves as the divine guardian of the Mekong River basin, ensuring peace and happiness for the region.

Today, the temple is more than just a site for religious ceremonies; it is a hub for local history education and cultural tourism. Every year, during the full moon of the 4th lunar month (typically around March), a grand festival is held to pay homage to Luang Pho Phra Chao Ong Tue. This event attracts Buddhist pilgrims from across the region to participate in ancient traditions that have been passed down through generations, serving as an enduring symbol of faith and spiritual unity for the people living along the Mekong River.
