“Mueang Nakhon Chum was a religious and administrative center during the Sukhothai period, with a sacred stupa, historic inscriptions, surrounding ancient sites, and a living local community that preserves its traditional charm.”

Mueang Nakhon Chum is located on the west bank of the Ping River and was once an important vassal city of the Sukhothai Kingdom, serving as a center for religion and governance. It was highly valued by King Mahathammaracha I (Pho Khun Likhit).

The most significant evidence is the Nakhon Chum Inscription, which records the founding of the city, the enshrinement of the Buddha’s relics, and the planting of the Bodhi tree, making this area one of the major centers of Buddhism in late Sukhothai.

The city’s layout forms a rectangular shape, with the city walls following the curves of the Ping River from east to west. Inside the walls are numerous ancient sites that are clearly distinct from the Aranyik area. Most temples are built of brick and relatively small, reflecting community-based settlements of the past.

The main ancient sites include:
Phra Borom That Nakhon Chum, Ubosot of Phra Borom That, Wat Chedi Klang Thung, Wat Nong Phikul, Wat Nong Langka, Wat Sum Kor, Wat Nong Plap, Wat Mong Kale, and Thung Setthi Fort, which are scattered throughout the city and ideal for historical sightseeing by car or bicycle.

Beyond historical sites, the city preserves cultural heritage, such as Ban Pho Po, a two-story teak house in semi-Western style built during King Rama V’s reign by a Burmese teak merchant. It remains a valuable architectural site for visitors to experience traditional culture.

Mueang Nakhon Chum is also a learning center for local crafts and wisdom, especially Buddhist amulet making. Tourists can observe traditional amulet-making processes and live demonstrations, showcasing the city’s famous craftsmanship.

Another highlight is the Nakhon Chum Retro Market, which recreates traditional lifestyles with local foods like khao tok sweets, local Miang, and rare ancient recipes. Vendors dress in period costumes, and cultural performances and traditional music enhance the historical atmosphere.

Finally, Mueang Nakhon Chum is part of the Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site along with Sukhothai. Many structures are made of laterite, reflecting the distinctive architecture of early Sukhothai and Lanna styles, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in authentic Thai history.
