“Sra Mon is the ancient royal palace area of Chakangrao, surrounded by earthen walls and moats with a large central pond, serving as evidence of rulers’ residences from Sukhothai to Ayutthaya periods.”
Kamphaeng Phet Ancient Palace Area Sra Mon is a large archaeological site located near the northern city wall of Kamphaeng Phet.
It is believed to have been the royal palace or residence of the ruling class during the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya periods (19th–24th Buddhist centuries).
The palace layout is rectangular, with earthen walls marking the boundary and moats surrounding three sides.
Inside the palace boundary is Sra Mon, a large central pond used for royal activities and as a main water source for residents.
Although the palatial structures no longer remain, archaeological findings such as pottery fragments, metal utensils, and building foundations reveal continuous habitation and the cultural development of Kamphaeng Phet at that time.
Studies of the city layout, earthen walls, and moats show an ancient urban planning system emphasizing security and intelligent water management.
The presence of three surrounding moats and a large central pond highlights the palace's importance as a center of power and urban administration.
Over time, Sra Mon remained the city’s central point, even through changes in governance and eras.
This site allows scholars and tourists to understand the daily life of the ruling class, ancient architecture, and the city’s relationship with water.
Today, Sra Mon is accessible for visitors to explore, take photos, and learn about Kamphaeng Phet’s history up close.
The area features informational signs and nature study trails that help visitors grasp the historical context and significance of this archaeological site, making Sra Mon one of the key highlights of Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
