“Pay respects to “Luang Pho Phut,” the miraculous Buddha image said to have emerged from the ground, and admire the ancient “Giant Shiva Lingam,” a rare artifact over a thousand years old.”

Wat Nantharam, commonly known by locals as Wat Tai, is an ancient temple that has stood alongside the Pak Phanang River for centuries. It is regarded as one of the most important spiritual centers of Pak Phanang District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, rich in legends, faith, and historical heritage passed down through generations.

The most remarkable feature of the temple is Luang Pho Phut, a sacred sandstone Buddha image believed to have miraculously emerged from the ground. According to local legend, after a powerful lightning strike in the past, the Buddha image gradually appeared from beneath the earth, allowing villagers to witness and worship it. This miraculous event gave rise to the name “Luang Pho Phut.” The Buddha image reflects late Ayutthaya-period artistry, radiating serenity, compassion, and deep spiritual power.

In addition to Luang Pho Phut, Wat Nantharam is also home to the Giant Shiva Lingam, an exquisitely carved limestone artifact. This rare relic is considered one of the most complete and significant discoveries in southern Thailand, dating back to the era of the Tambralinga Kingdom, reflecting the strong influence of ancient Hindu beliefs in the region.

The atmosphere within the temple grounds is peaceful and tranquil, shaded by large, mature trees that provide a cooling refuge for visitors. Its riverside location offers a glimpse into the traditional waterfront lifestyle of Pak Phanang’s old community. The architecture of the ordination hall and vihara preserves its original design, showcasing the refined craftsmanship and wisdom of local artisans.

Strolling around the temple allows visitors to experience the essence of the past through well-preserved art, artifacts, and historical traces displayed in a simple yet meaningful manner. Wat Nantharam is not only a place of worship but also a living museum of the Pak Phanang River basin, telling stories of faith, culture, and history.

Devotion to Luang Pho Phut remains strong today, evident in the constant offerings of flowers, incense, and prayers from worshippers seeking blessings and prosperity. During major religious festivals, the temple becomes lively as locals gather to uphold long-standing traditions and community rituals.

One of the must-see spots is the riverside view in front of the temple, where fishing boats glide along the wide river. In the late afternoon, sunlight reflecting on the water creates a serene and memorable scene. Wat Nantharam is therefore an ideal destination for those seeking spiritual peace, cultural insight, and historical appreciation in one meaningful visit.
