“A traditional raised Southern Thai wooden house with a hip roof, consisting of two buildings connected by a central open veranda. It features displays of personal belongings and exhibitions related to the Tinsulanonda family.”
Phathammarong Museum was established as a replica of the former residence associated with the family of General Prem Tinsulanonda, a former Prime Minister of Thailand. It is closely linked to the historical role of the “Phathammarong” (prison warden), a position once held by his father at the Songkhla prison. Beyond being a reconstructed house, the museum aims to present historical, social, and cultural narratives of provincial civil servants in earlier periods through the lens of one family that played an important role in Thai political history.
The building is designed in the style of traditional Southern Thai architecture, featuring a raised wooden structure that improves ventilation and protects against humidity. It has a hip roof commonly seen in traditional official residences of the past. The layout consists of two connected buildings joined by a central open veranda, which serves as a transitional space between indoor and outdoor areas. This architectural style reflects a blend of traditional Thai design and early modern construction influences.
Inside the museum, the exhibitions are presented in a “living house” concept, displaying personal belongings, historical photographs, and archival documents. It also covers the life and career of General Prem Tinsulanonda, as well as the origin and meaning of the royal bestowed surname “Tinsulanonda.” In addition, it provides insights into Thailand’s historical correctional system and the role of the Phathammarong, helping visitors gain a deeper understanding of the social context of that era.
Today, the museum serves as a local historical learning center, a cultural information hub, and an important tourist attraction in Songkhla Old Town. It plays a key role in connecting individual life stories with national history, allowing visitors to experience and better understand past ways of life through an authentic physical setting.
