“This internationally renowned forest monastery, founded by Luang Por Chah, serves as a center for foreign monks to practice meditation. The serene natural surroundings provide an ideal setting for reflection, mindfulness, and inner peace.”

Wat Pah Nanachat was established in 1975 by the Venerable Ajahn Chah (Luang Por Chah), a highly respected monk in the Thai Forest Tradition. The monastery was created specifically for foreign monks to study and practice the Theravada Buddhist monastic lifestyle, emphasizing both Samatha and Vipassana meditation. Monks live simply, in harmony with nature, and follow strict monastic discipline.

The monastery is set amidst lush forest, offering clean air, tranquility, and natural beauty, making it perfect for meditation and spiritual practice. It consists of meditation halls, monks’ quarters, a refectory, and outdoor practice areas, all designed to blend harmoniously with the natural environment.

Monks at the monastery come from countries including the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Germany, and Japan, making it a prominent international center for learning Theravada Buddhism. Daily routines include alms rounds, a single meal a day, sitting meditation, walking meditation, and Dhamma study. The disciplined lifestyle encourages deep spiritual growth.

The monastery also offers programs for both monks and lay visitors, including meditation retreats, Dhamma talks, and short-term monastic experience programs. Visitors can learn about the Thai forest monastic lifestyle, participate in group meditation, and join in important Buddhist ceremonies such as Magha Puja and Visakha Puja.

The surrounding environment is tranquil, with small streams and the sounds of nature aiding concentration and mindfulness. The monastery provides designated areas for study and quiet reflection, offering access to Dhamma texts and reference materials.

Wat Pah Nanachat is not only a center for foreign monks but also a place for laypeople to experience authentic Thai forest monastic life, develop mindfulness, and integrate spiritual principles into daily life. Annual events, such as alms-giving ceremonies, Dhamma talks, and group meditation, attract visitors from all over the world, reinforcing its importance as a spiritual, cultural, and educational center in Ubon Ratchathani.
