“A magnificent chedi built to commemorate the 2500th anniversary of Buddhism and enshrining relics of the Buddha.”
Wat Phra That Nong Bua is a prominent temple located in the heart of Ubon Ratchathani city. It holds great historical and cultural significance, especially as a landmark commemorating the 2500th anniversary of Buddhism. Constructed in 1957, the temple’s iconic chedi, known as Phra That Si Maha Pho, symbolizes the strong faith and devotion of local Buddhists.
The chedi was modeled after the Mahabodhi Stupa in Bodh Gaya, India — the place where the Buddha attained enlightenment. Standing at approximately 56 meters tall, the structure features a square base and gradually tapered levels, finished in gleaming white and gold tiles. Its exterior is adorned with intricate stucco carvings and bas-reliefs that depict key scenes from the life of the Buddha, including his birth, enlightenment, first sermon, and passing into Nirvana.
Inside the chedi, relics of the Buddha are enshrined in the top tier, making it a sacred pilgrimage site. Visitors can walk around the chedi in a circular path for meditation or religious observance. The site exudes tranquility and reverence, attracting both devout Buddhists and curious travelers.
The temple grounds also feature a large ordination hall (ubosot) with traditional Thai architectural elements, richly decorated with murals blending Buddhist lore and local Isan folklore. There is also a Dharma hall and beautifully landscaped areas where visitors can relax or reflect.
During important Buddhist holidays such as Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, and Asalha Bucha, the temple becomes a vibrant center of religious activities including candlelight processions, merit-making, and chanting. The annual Buddhist Lent candle festival is a particularly popular event, drawing visitors from across the country.
Wat Phra That Nong Bua also serves as a learning center for youth and spiritual seekers. Regular meditation retreats, Dhamma talks, and cultural activities are held throughout the year, with guidance from knowledgeable monks and scholars.
With its serene environment, spiritual richness, and artistic beauty, Wat Phra That Nong Bua is not only a sacred site but also a must-visit destination for anyone wishing to experience the depth of Thai Buddhist culture.
