“ Hua Nai Raeng Rock perched on a cliff, offering panoramic Gulf views of Chalatat Beach, along with an ancient chedi and a peaceful temple surrounded by nature.”

Khao Kao Seng, also known locally as Khao Kao Saen, is a small granite hill located along the southern coastline of Chalatat Beach in Songkhla province. The hill extends gently into the sea and has been shaped over time by constant wave and wind erosion, forming unique rock formations, steep cliffs, and layered natural stone terraces that descend toward the water. This distinctive landscape gives the area a strong identity, offering wide panoramic views of the Gulf of Thailand, including the coastline, horizon, and the fishing communities below. During different tidal periods, especially high and low tide, the changing textures of the rocks and colors of the sea create varying atmospheres throughout the day.

Beyond its natural beauty, Khao Kao Seng holds deep cultural and legendary significance. It is closely associated with the story of Nai Raeng, a local ruler who devoted himself to transporting a vast treasure, known as “nine hundred thousand,” to help build a sacred stupa in Nakhon Si Thammarat. Unfortunately, he failed to arrive in time and died from grief. Before his death, he ordered that his head be placed on the hill to guard the treasure buried beneath a large rock. This legend gave rise to the famous “Hua Nai Raeng Rock,” a precariously positioned boulder near the cliff that evokes both fascination and mystery for visitors. The story reflects local beliefs in guardian spirits and demonstrates how folklore is deeply tied to the physical landscape.

In terms of spiritual and religious significance, the area is also home to Wat Khao Kao Saen, a शांत and peaceful temple set amidst lush surroundings. The temple features an ancient chedi prominently located on the hilltop, serving as a key landmark of the area. Visitors can walk up to pay respects while enjoying scenic views, making it a place where natural beauty and spiritual tranquility coexist harmoniously.

At the base of the hill lies the Kao Seng fishing community, where traditional coastal lifestyles are still actively preserved. Visitors can experience the authentic atmosphere of a seaside village, observing small fishing boats lined along the shore, fishermen repairing nets, drying fish, and carrying out daily routines closely tied to the sea. This adds depth to the travel experience, offering not just sightseeing but also cultural insight into local life.

The walking paths around Khao Kao Seng have been developed to allow visitors to explore the rocky coastline with a reasonable level of safety. These paths provide an opportunity to experience the sea up close, hear waves crashing against rocks, and feel the ocean breeze fully. Early mornings offer soft light and a calm atmosphere, while evenings bring stunning sunsets with golden light reflecting off the sea and rocks, making it ideal for photography and relaxation. However, some sections can be steep and slippery, so caution is advised when walking.

With its combination of natural scenery, legend, spiritual elements, and community life, Khao Kao Seng stands out as a unique destination that retains its authentic charm. While it may not be as crowded as other major tourist spots, it offers a deeper, more peaceful experience, making it ideal for those seeking to escape the crowds and enjoy a different perspective of Songkhla’s coastal beauty.
