“A rafting route through deep forest with a fully intact ecosystem, offering chances to spot rare wildlife such as serow along riverside cliffs, surrounded by peaceful and scenic natural views.”

Mae Tuen River originates from the high mountain ranges of Omkoi District, Chiang Mai, flowing south through Mae Ramat and Sam Ngao districts in Tak before merging with the Ping River upstream of Bhumibol Dam. The river runs through the heart of the Mae Tuen Wildlife Sanctuary, one of Thailand’s most important western forest conservation areas.

Rafting activities are the main highlight of Mae Tuen River. Visitors can experience traditional bamboo rafting or inflatable rafting, usually starting from forest protection units in Mae Ramat District. The rafting route winds through rocky rapids, dense evergreen and hill evergreen forests, and crystal-clear waters, creating a calm and immersive nature experience.

A wildlife sanctuary paradise, the river is home to rare species, especially the serow, often seen foraging on steep limestone and rocky cliffs along the riverbanks. Other wildlife includes the green peafowl and a wide variety of forest bird species, making the area highly attractive for wildlife enthusiasts and nature photographers.

Riverside lifestyles along Mae Tuen River include communities of the Karen (Pgaz K’nyau) people, who maintain traditional ways of life closely connected to the forest and waterways. Their presence reflects a harmonious balance between ecological conservation and cultural heritage, enriching the river’s eco-tourism value.
