“Tham Ru Nok Sak is a natural cave located in Saba Yoi District, Songkhla Province. It features naturally formed stalactites, stalagmites, and cave chambers. The atmosphere is quiet and peaceful, making it suitable for adventurous exploration and appreciating the beauty of nature.”

Tham Ru Nok Sak is a natural limestone cave located in the mountainous area of Saba Yoi District, Songkhla Province, Thailand. It was formed through a long-term geological process known as karstification, where slightly acidic rainwater gradually seeps into cracks in limestone and reacts with calcium carbonate over thousands to millions of years, slowly eroding the rock and creating underground cavities that develop into interconnected chambers and passageways. Inside the cave, the structure consists of alternating wide chambers and narrow corridors following natural rock fractures, making exploration challenging and requiring careful movement with reliable lighting such as flashlights or headlamps at all times. In some areas, stalactites and stalagmites can be found, formed by mineral-rich water dripping over time and gradually building unique formations that may resemble stone curtains or columns descending from the ceiling and rising from the floor. The cave environment is characterized by high humidity year-round, relatively stable temperatures that are noticeably cooler than outside conditions, and very limited natural light, which only enters near the entrance or through small openings, creating a quiet and slightly mysterious atmosphere. Certain sections of the cave floor may be slippery due to moisture or moss, and loose rocks can also be present, requiring extra caution while walking. The internal structure also includes multiple branching paths formed by natural rock fractures, which can easily cause confusion for inexperienced visitors without a local guide. The surrounding area is part of a karst landscape typical of southern Thailand, featuring complex limestone mountains that are the source of numerous caves in the region, and it also serves as a habitat for wildlife adapted to dark and humid environments, such as bats, cave-dwelling insects, and certain microorganisms. As a result, tourism in Tham Ru Nok Sak is considered more of an exploratory or adventure-based activity rather than a commercial tourist attraction, as there are no permanent lighting systems, constructed walkways, or visitor facilities inside the cave. Visitors are therefore advised to prepare appropriate equipment such as strong lighting, non-slip trekking shoes, and preferably a local guide familiar with the area for safety, especially during the rainy season when water levels and internal conditions may change rapidly.

How to Get There
  • By car: From Songkhla city, drive along Highway 43 toward Chana District, then turn onto Highway 4085 heading to Saba Yoi District. Once you reach the district area, continue driving through local community roads toward Saba Yoi Subdistrict. It is recommended to ask local residents for directions, as the road leading to the cave is a small village road with limited or unclear signage. Drive slowly and carefully, as the final section may be narrow and less developed.
