“A beautiful limestone cave formed by underground water erosion, showcasing diverse and actively growing stalactites and stalagmites, with natural light filtering through openings to create dramatic shadows and scenery inside the cave.”
Takhobi cave is one of the most significant natural and geological attractions in Umphang District, Tak Province. Located in Ban Tako Bi, it sits conveniently near the main town and the entrance to Umphang. This cave is like a hidden subterranean gem, waiting for adventurers to experience the grandeur and mystery that nature has meticulously crafted over millions of years.
Physical Characteristics
Tham Tako Bi is a massive limestone cave featuring high, airy ceilings. Geologists believe the cave was formed by the long-term erosion of underground rivers and geological shifts. Inside, there are several large chambers interconnected by trails that alternate between gentle slopes and flat ground. Exploring the cave is relatively easy and convenient for general tourists, as clear paths have been established and lighting systems installed in certain areas to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit.
Subterranean Beauty
The primary highlights of Tham Tako Bi are the stalactites and stalagmites, which remain in remarkably pristine condition. They appear in a vast variety of exquisite shapes, resembling master-class sculptures—from flowing limestone curtains and massive pillars supporting the cave ceiling to uniquely shaped stalactites that sparkle when touched by light. Many of these are still "living" formations, with water droplets indicating ongoing growth. Furthermore, during certain times of the day, sunlight streams through openings in the cave ceiling (sinkholes), casting beams of light onto the damp rocks and cave walls. This creates a surreal, dreamlike atmosphere, making it feel as though visitors have stepped into another world.
Activities and Learning
Most visitors spend about 1 to 2 hours exploring this underworld beauty. Beyond enjoying the stunning scenery, it provides an excellent opportunity to study geology and the formation of limestone structures in a real-world environment. The cool and tranquil atmosphere inside the cave ensures a pleasant and rewarding experience for those fascinated by the wonders of nature.
