Khu Khut Waterfowl Park, also known as the Songkhla Lake Non-Hunting Area, is a vast wetland of international importance located in Sathing Phra and Ranot districts, Songkhla Province. It is part of the Songkhla Lake ecosystem, the largest natural lake in Thailand.

The landscape consists of shallow lowland wetlands with a mix of freshwater, brackish water, and occasional seawater intrusion from the Gulf of Thailand. This unique combination creates a highly diverse ecosystem, making it an ideal habitat, feeding ground, and shelter for over 200 species of waterbirds, including both resident and migratory species from Siberia, China, and northern Asia.

During the migratory season (approximately December to April), large flocks of birds such as ducks, egrets, painted storks, and various shorebirds can be seen across open waters, grasslands, and aquatic vegetation. This is considered the best time for birdwatchers and wildlife photographers.

A highlight of visiting here is taking a local long-tail boat tour, which allows visitors to explore canals and wide-open waters for about 1–2 hours. Along the way, you can enjoy scenic views of lotus fields, aquatic plants like hydrilla, and flocks of birds flying nearby. Visitors may also observe traditional fishing practices such as lift nets, fish traps, and cage aquaculture.

In addition to boat tours, the area features a visitor center providing ecological information, nature trails for exploration, and observation towers offering panoramic views of Songkhla Lake.

Ecologically, Khu Khut Waterfowl Park plays a vital role in maintaining natural balance. It serves as a breeding ground for aquatic life and acts as a natural water filtration system. It is also an important learning site for students, researchers, and nature enthusiasts.

How to Get There

• By Car: From Songkhla town, take Highway 408 (Songkhla–Ranot) toward Sathing Phra. At kilometer markers 126–127, turn left and continue for about 3 kilometers to reach the park office.

• Visit in the early morning 06:00–08:00 or late afternoon before sunset for cooler weather and more active birds

• December to April is the migratory season, making it the best time for birdwatching

• Bring binoculars or a zoom lens for a clearer view of the birds

• Prepare a hat, sunscreen, and drinking water as the area is quite open

• Book a boat in advance, especially during weekends or peak season, for a smoother experience
