“A scenic viewpoint overlooking the beautiful sea of Chumphon with panoramic views of the gulf and surrounding islands, especially Koh Maprao, the closest island. It is also home to Phra Phuttha Metta Maha Baramee, a large bronze Buddha image symbolizing prosperity and auspiciousness.”
Khao Chao Mueang Chumphon is a tourist attraction that combines natural beauty and sacred religious sites. At the top of the hill, there is a viewing pavilion where visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Hat Sai Ri Beach, the Gulf of Thailand, and several islands within the Mu Ko Chumphon National Park. It also houses the Marine National Park Operations Center No. 1, which may provide a nature study center and information on marine tourism.
The hill’s main sacred landmark is Phra Phuttha Metta Maha Baramee, a large bronze Buddha image in the posture of granting blessings, about 15 meters tall, built to bring prosperity and merit to the people of Chumphon and visitors who come to pay homage.
At the summit stands the Phra Phutthathat Chedi Si Chumphon, which was initiated by Mr. Prayoon Phromphan, the Governor of Chumphon Province, together with devout donors including officials, merchants, and local residents from Chumphon and other provinces. It was built as an act of Buddhist devotion and as a symbol of honor for the city of Chumphon and Buddhists around the world.
The foundation stone-laying ceremony took place on April 1, 1994 (B.E. 2537), presided over by Phra Anomkhunmunee, the Chief Monk of Chumphon Province (Dhammayut). The architectural design was created by Mr. Prasert Suntharowat from the Department of Fine Arts’ Architectural Division, and the construction was supervised by Mr. Phrutthiduang Malasuth, completed in July 1994 (B.E. 2537).
Visitors can also admire the panoramic scenery, take photos, and learn about the marine ecosystem and coastal lifestyle at the viewing pavilion and operations center.
