Chulabhorn Dam is a multipurpose dam that plays an important role in energy production, irrigation, and tourism. It is located in a mountainous area of Khon San District, Chaiyaphum Province, where the average elevation is around 700 meters above sea level. This highland setting creates a cool climate throughout the year and a landscape of complex mountain ranges surrounding a large reservoir.The dam was originally known as “Nam Phrom Dam” because it was constructed by blocking the Nam Phrom River, a tributary of the Chi River basin. It was later renamed Chulabhorn Dam. The structure is a rockfill dam with a clay core, where large rocks provide structural strength against water pressure while the compacted clay core prevents water seepage, making it suitable for mountainous terrain with complex geology.

The dam is approximately 70 meters high and 700 meters long. The resulting reservoir stretches across the valley, creating a distinctive and scenic landscape. The stored water is used for domestic consumption, agriculture, and flood control during the rainy season, helping reduce the risk of downstream flooding.In terms of power generation, Chulabhorn Dam is part of Thailand’s hydroelectric system operated by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). Water from the reservoir flows through a penstock to drive turbines, converting hydraulic energy into mechanical energy, which is then transformed into electricity by generators and supplied to the national grid. This system supports clean energy production, reduces reliance on fossil fuels, and enhances regional energy stability.Beyond energy production, the dam also serves as an important water management system. It stores water during the rainy season and releases it appropriately during the dry season to support agriculture in Khon San District and nearby areas. It also helps maintain ecological balance in the Nam Phrom River and upper Chi River basin. The large reservoir increases local humidity, creating a noticeably cooler microclimate compared to surrounding lowland areas.

The surrounding environment is rich in natural and ecological diversity, consisting of mixed deciduous forests and dry evergreen forests. The dam crest serves as a main viewpoint, offering panoramic views of the reservoir and surrounding mountains. Sunsets are especially popular as golden light reflects across the water, creating a picturesque atmosphere. Other highlights include the Phrom Phisamai Pavilion viewpoint and an ancient plant garden, which adds educational value to the visit.

The site also includes visitor facilities such as an EGAT information center, guest houses, restaurants, and landscaped rest areas. Nature trails allow visitors to explore the forest and learn about the local ecosystem. How to Get There

• By car: From Chaiyaphum city, take Highway 201 toward Khon San District, then turn onto Highway 2055 to Chulabhorn Dam. The total distance is approximately 120 km. The route is mountainous with curves and steep sections, so careful driving is strongly recommended.
