“A wide granite rock plateau, a 1.6 km shaded jungle trail, multiple natural pools for swimming, and a peaceful monastery at the entrance”
Hin Lad Waterfall is a natural waterfall originating from Khao Pela, where streams flow over large granite boulders along the slope of the valley, forming beautiful cascading layers. The surroundings feature a mix of light forest and coconut plantations, reflecting the natural landscape of Koh Samui.
The signature highlight is the “Hin Lad” rock plate, a wide, flat granite surface along the stream where visitors can relax, enjoy the scenery, and take photos. Along the trail, there are several natural pools suitable for swimming, especially near the upper level where the water is clearer and flows more strongly.
To reach the main waterfall, visitors start from Hin Lad Monastery near the parking area and walk along the stream for about 40–50 minutes (approximately 1.6 km). The trail is shaded and rich with tropical vegetation, accompanied by the sounds of flowing water and birds. While slightly challenging in some parts, it is generally manageable for most visitors.
At the entrance, there are shops and local food stalls, and about 1 km along the trail, there is a small shop (closing around 4:30 PM). However, it is recommended to bring enough drinking water, especially during quieter periods.
Beyond its beauty, the waterfall serves as an important water source for the Ban Nai Phlao community, supporting local life on the western side of Koh Samui. With its peaceful atmosphere and fewer crowds compared to beach areas, Hin Lad is considered a hidden gem for those seeking relaxation and a deeper connection with nature.
The best time to visit is September to January, when the waterfall is at its most vibrant with abundant water and lush greenery. During the dry season, water levels may decrease, but the area remains suitable for hiking and relaxation.
