“Marvel at the giant white Buddha on vast stone plateaus, enjoy panoramic views from the glass skywalk, worship seven daily birthday pagodas, and experience the legendary, serene atmosphere of nature.”

Wat Phu Phan Udom Tham, commonly known among locals as "Wat Dan Sao Khoi," is situated on the Phu Phan Noi mountain range in Na Kae District, Nakhon Phanom Province. This temple is far more than just a site for meditation; it stands as a significant historical witness for Thailand. During the years 1957–1977, this area served as a strategic stronghold during the era of ideological conflict between the Thai government and the Communist Party of Thailand. Once the situation returned to peace, the temple was established as a symbol of tranquility and national reconciliation. It houses sacred Buddha relics and features the magnificent "Phra Phuttha Maha Mongkol Bophit Chaturathit Prathan Phon," a massive white Buddha statue that sits majestically on a broad stone plateau, serving as a spiritual anchor and a reminder of national unity.

The name "Dan Sao Khoi" is derived from the geological feature of the area—a "Dan" or large natural stone terrace—combined with a poignant local legend of a faithful young woman who visited this plateau every day to wait for her lover until her final breath, becoming a symbol of unwavering devotion. Today, the temple has evolved into a comprehensive Dhamma tourism destination. A notable highlight is the collection of seven replicated pagodas representing each day of the week's birthday, allowing devotees to complete their merit-making in a single visit. Furthermore, the temple offers breathtaking vistas, including a glass skywalk that extends over the cliffside, providing a panoramic view of Na Kae District stretching as far as That Phanom and the mountain ranges of Laos. Surrounded by lush, peaceful forests, it remains a perfect sanctuary for relaxation and spiritual contemplation.

How to Get There
  • From Nakhon Phanom city, take Highway 212 towards That Phanom, then turn right onto Highway 223 to Na Kae District. Follow the signs for "Ban Dan Sao Khoi" to ascend the Phu Phan Noi mountain. The temple is 6 km from the district center via a fully paved road accessible by all vehicles.
