“Ban Khong Sawan is a renowned pottery production center that has preserved local wisdom for more than 200 years. The secret use of termite mound clay gives the products durability and a unique character. It also serves as a learning center, offering visitors the opportunity to experience and try pottery-making themselves.”

Ban Khong Sawan is a village with a pottery-making history of over 200 years. Its origins trace back to villagers who migrated from Ban Thung Tum in Ubon Ratchathani Province, bringing their pottery skills with them. They discovered that the local termite mound clay was ideal for pottery because of its special qualities, which make the products durable and strong after firing. This discovery established pottery as the village’s main occupation, which continues to this day.

The traditional pottery-making process begins with collecting clay from termite mounds, mixing it with natural clay in suitable proportions, and kneading it until smooth. The mixture is then shaped by hand or on a pottery wheel. Artisans create jars, clay pots, vases, and various items according to traditional designs and their own creativity. Once the desired shapes are achieved, the pieces are sun-dried until completely dry and then fired in a traditional wood kiln. Firing in the wood kiln requires skill and experience, as the temperature and duration affect the color and strength of each product.

Ban Khong Sawan also functions as a cultural learning center. Visitors can observe the entire pottery-making process and participate in workshops to try pottery-making themselves. This hands-on experience provides insight into local wisdom and connects traditional culture with new generations.

The pottery products from Ban Khong Sawan are not only beautiful crafts but also reflect the villagers’ way of life and cultural heritage. The careful selection of clay and the combination of traditional techniques with creativity make each piece unique and culturally valuable. The preservation of pottery skills also provides employment for the community, supporting local economy and cultural tourism.
