“One of the most beautiful sunset viewpoints along the Mekong in Chiang Khong, offering clear views of Huay Xai (Laos), original concrete ferry ramp structures, and an active Thai–Lao border crossing point.”
Bak Pier was once a major transportation and trade hub between Thailand and Laos (Bokeo Province, Lao PDR), during the era when large ferry boats were required to transport people, vehicles, and goods across the Mekong River. It was considered one of the most important ferry crossings in Chiang Khong’s history.
Today, the area remains an official permanent Thai–Lao border crossing point, located along the Mekong River with clear views of Huay Xai town in Laos. Thai travelers can cross into Laos by contacting the Chiang Khong District Office, preparing two 1-inch photos, a copy of national ID card, and a fee of around 30 THB. Foreign visitors must obtain a visa through embassies according to regulations.
The border checkpoint operates daily from 06:30 AM – 06:30 PM. From here, travelers can continue river journeys to Luang Prabang and Vientiane (Laos) and return to Thailand via Nong Khai Province, making this one of the key international Mekong River travel routes.
During boat journeys, visitors can enjoy diverse landscapes along both riverbanks, including rocky formations, flowing water channels, and local riverside lifestyles. Scenes of fishermen casting nets and catching abundant fish as well as river transportation activities reflect the deep connection between local communities and the Mekong River.
Geographically, the Chiang Khong section of the Mekong features diverse water conditions including deep channels, shallow areas, and submerged rock formations. This creates a rich aquatic ecosystem and serves as an important natural resource supporting both Thai and Lao communities along the river.
Bak Pier also reflects the identity of a border town where Thailand and Laos exchange culture, trade, and kinship ties. People from both sides share long-standing relationships, creating a unique social and cultural landscape.
Today, the site has been developed into a public riverside space and viewpoint area, ideal for walking, photography, and relaxation. In the evening, sunset light reflects on the Mekong River, creating a golden and romantic atmosphere.
In addition, the river route from Bak Pier is part of the historic Mekong cultural corridor, connecting the civilizations of Lanna and Lan Xang. It is not only a scenic destination but also a meaningful cultural learning space.
