“During the dry season, the water level drops, revealing mid-river islets and sandbanks that are more beautiful than in any other season.”
How to Get There
- By car: From Mukdahan city, take Highway 212 toward Wan Yai District for about 20 kilometers, then turn onto the riverside road leading to Kaeng Kabao. The total distance is approximately 35 kilometers.
Travel Tips
- It is recommended to visit between January and May, as this is the Mekong River’s dry season when rock formations and sandbanks are most clearly visible and perfect for photography.
- Arrive before 10:30–11:00 AM to secure good riverside seating at restaurants, especially for roasted pig shops that fill up quickly on weekends.
- The best time for sunset viewing is around 4:30–6:00 PM, when the sunlight reflects beautifully on the Mekong River.
- Bring cash, as some local restaurants may not accept card payments or digital transfers.
- For good fortune, visitors are encouraged to pay respect to the Phaya Sri Phuchong Mukdana Nakaraj statue. For a quieter experience, avoid peak crowds on Saturdays and Sundays.
