“A cute animal talent show, an African savanna zone where many animals live together in a large area, and a giraffe feeding activity.”
Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo (also known as Korat Zoo) is one of the largest zoos under the supervision of the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand (ZPO). It plays a key role in wildlife exhibitions, conservation, research, and as a major learning resource for nature and the environment in Northeastern Thailand.
History and Area
The zoo officially opened in 1996 and occupies a vast area of over 2,188 rai (approximately 3.5 square kilometers), making it one of the largest zoos in Thailand. A distinctive design features exhibits that mimic natural habitats, particularly the African zone, earning it the nickname "the Safari of Isan."
Exhibition Zones and Key Animals
The zoo's exhibits emphasize biodiversity, particularly endangered and rare wildlife. The main zones include:
-
African Savannah: This is the zoo's flagship zone. This zoo exhibits large herbivores from Africa, such as giraffes, zebras, ostriches, white rhinos, and hippopotamuses, all of which are kept together in a large, natural setting.
-
Animals from Other Continents: Animals from Asia and South America are also on display, including tigers, bears, various monkeys, and a variety of bird species.
-
Reptile House: This zoo houses a variety of reptiles, including snakes, monitor lizards, turtles, and crocodiles.
-
Korat Kids World: This zone for young children showcases non-aggressive animals, allowing children to learn and interact with small mammals. It also hosts entertaining and educational shows.
Facilities and Activities
Due to its large size, Korat Zoo offers a variety of services to facilitate visitors:
-
Tram Service: This is the primary means of access, as walking throughout the zoo can be time-consuming and tiring. The tram runs along key stops.
-
Bicycle Rental: For those who prefer to explore the zoo independently, bicycle rentals are available for those who wish to cycle along designated routes.
-
Animal Feeding: Popular activities include feeding giraffes and white rhinos. This helps create memorable interactions between visitors and the animals.
-
Large Reservoir: Within the zoo is a natural reservoir offering paddle boat rides for sightseeing.
-
Restaurant and Souvenir Shop: Food, beverages, and souvenirs are available to serve visitors throughout the area.
Furthermore, the Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo serves as a center for conservation efforts, playing a role in breeding rare wildlife and serving as a research center to promote zoology and environmental knowledge to the public.
