“Witness the success of transforming degraded sandy soil into fertile agricultural land. Enjoy the scenic beauty of Huai Jek Reservoir and the Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden.”

Khao Hin Sorn Study Centre Dating back to 1979, the land in this area was severely degraded. The soil was sandy and lacked nutrients due to years of monocropping (cassava), leading locals to believe that nothing could grow here. When His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great (Rama IX) visited the area, he initiated the establishment of this study centre to serve as a model for "fighting drought." The project began with water resource development and soil quality improvement using vetiver grass and compost until the "dead soil" was restored to life once again.

Sustainable Tourism and the Way of Sufficiency:

  • Today Khao Hin Sorn is not merely a research facility but a highly popular agrotourism destination. Visitors can breathe in the fresh air, take a tram tour of the demonstration farms, or shop for high-quality processed agricultural products crafted by the local community within the project. A visit here is more than just sightseeing; it is an opportunity to absorb the "Sufficiency Economy" philosophy and witness the human effort to live sustainably with nature.

Key Landmarks and Learning Points: The centre spans over 1,800 Rai (approx. 711 acres) and is divided into several fascinating sections, including:

  • Huai Jek Reservoir: A tranquil relaxation spot with beautiful scenery. It serves as the primary water source for all agricultural activities within the centre.

  • Vetiver Grass Artistry: Learn how vetiver grass is utilized to prevent soil erosion, which is the cornerstone of soil conservation at this site.

  • Livestock Department: Visit demonstration farms featuring dairy cows and poultry, focusing on self-reliance and sustainable farming.

  • Botanical Garden: A collection of rare plant species and various medicinal herbs, ideal for nature walks and studying biodiversity.

Nearby Travel Options:

  • After exploring the Royal Development Study Centre, visitors can pay respects at Khao Hin Sorn Temple, located nearby. The Temple features beautiful Thai architecture and offers a panoramic bird's-eye view from the hilltop. Alternatively, travel further to Phanom Sarakham District to savor Kway Teow Pak Mor (steamed rice-skin dumplings in soup), the famous local delicacy of the area.
