Wat Maduea Wan Buddha Footprint (also known as Wat Madeua Wan) is a significant religious site perched atop a hill in central Koh Phangan. The elegant white pavilion houses a beautifully carved replica of the Buddha footprint, revered by locals for generations. Visiting and paying respect to the footprint is a long-standing tradition.
Spiritual and Natural Path:
Climb the hill via the long Nāga staircase flanked by lush greenery. Along the way, shaded resting points provide cool breezes, making the ascent manageable. At the top, the spacious pavilion area allows visitors to explore and enjoy the panoramic surroundings. Popular photo spots include views of the white pavilion against the blue sky and the sea.
Elevated Viewpoint:
Besides its religious significance, the site offers one of the most serene and beautiful viewpoints on the island. How to Get There
- By Car or Motorcycle: From Thong Sala Pier, head north along the main road (toward Phaeng Waterfall / Chalok Lam) for about 10–15 minutes. Watch for the Wat Maduea Wan sign on the left near Ma Duea Wan Village. The road is accessible, with ample parking.
Travel Tips
- Best Time to Visit: Morning (08:00 – 10:00) to avoid the heat, or late afternoon (16:30 onwards) for sunset views
- Etiquette: As a sacred site, dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees) and remove shoes before entering the pavilion
- Photography: Popular angles include shots from the Nāga staircase looking up at the white pavilion against the sky
