“Admire U Thong style Buddha images and Sangkhalok ceramics discovered in Chai Nat, while witnessing the legacy of faith through cultural heritage collected by the late Venerable Phra Chai Nat Muni (Nawam Sutto).”
Chai Nat Muni National Museum is one of the most significant historical and archaeological learning centers in Chai Nat Province. It was established to collect, preserve, and present cultural heritage and artifacts discovered throughout the province. The museum originated from the deep devotion of Phra Chainat Muni (Nawam Sutatto), former Provincial Ecclesiastical Chief of Chai Nat and abbot of Wat Mahathat, who gathered numerous artifacts unearthed from Wat Mahathat and nearby areas. These valuable objects were later entrusted to the Fine Arts Department to formally establish a national museum for public education and cultural preservation.
The exhibition building is a two-story structure in applied Thai architectural style, located within the peaceful grounds of Wat Mahathat in Sankhaburi District. The interior is systematically organized to present historical development from prehistoric times through the Dvaravati, Lopburi, U Thong, and early Ayutthaya periods. The displays highlight the evolution of the ancient community of Mueang Phraek Si Racha, once an important city in the Noi River basin.
One of the museum’s key highlights is its collection of sandstone and stucco Buddha images from the Lopburi and U Thong artistic traditions. These sculptures reflect a harmonious blend of Khmer and Thai artistic influences, illustrating the region’s religious and cultural prosperity centuries ago.
The second floor features an impressive display of Sangkhalok ceramics and glazed wares excavated in the area, along with votive tablets, tools, and everyday objects that reveal aspects of ancient life and trade along the Noi River. Each artifact is carefully illuminated and accompanied by detailed explanations, allowing visitors to gain deeper insight into the social, economic, and spiritual evolution of the region.
For students, scholars, archaeology enthusiasts, and photographers, the museum serves as a treasure trove of knowledge on Buddhist art and local history. The carefully arranged lighting enhances the beauty of the Buddha images, while the elegant Thai-style architecture of the building itself provides an atmosphere that is both dignified and inspiring. A visit here offers a meaningful foundation before exploring the numerous archaeological sites scattered throughout Sankhaburi District.
Visitors are warmly invited to journey back in time and discover the greatness of Chai Nat’s ancestors through these invaluable artifacts. Each piece reflects devotion, craftsmanship, and the refined wisdom of Thai artisans preserved across centuries at Chai Nat Muni National Museum.
